SPOKANE, Wash. — After years of delays and postponements, the federal REAL ID deadline officially arrives Wednesday, bringing new identification requirements for air travelers across the United States.
Starting May 7, every traveler over the age of 18 will need a REAL ID-compliant form of identification to pass through security at U.S. airports. Without one, passengers must present an alternative form of identification approved by the Transportation Security Administration, such as a U.S. passport, passport card, permanent resident card or border crossing card.
Tuesday morning, Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem said travelers will be able to fly without a Real ID, however the security and identification process will take much longer. These travelers will be diverted into another line.
In Washington, REAL ID-compliant cards include Enhanced Driver Licenses and Enhanced Identification Cards. These can be identified by the words “Enhanced Driver License” or “Enhanced Identification Card” printed in the upper right corner, along with a U.S. flag icon.
In Idaho, the REAL ID is known as the “Star Card.” It features a star symbol in the upper right corner of the license or ID card.
“I got it about a month ago for this trip,” said Robbie Mullins, who was traveling from Arkansas.
Others are still scrambling. “I do not [have one]. That’s why we’re traveling today instead of tomorrow. I had to pay extra for my ticket for that reason — procrastination,” said Dale Bruhl.
For those not planning to travel immediately, there is still time to obtain a REAL ID. However, the process requires an in-person appointment and several forms of documentation, including a birth certificate, Social Security card, and two proofs of residency, such as a mortgage statement or a utility bill.
