SPOKANE, Wash.– One of the first outlooks for fire season in the Inland Northwest is in. The National Weather Service in Spokane says we should expect a busier fire season this year than last.
The reasoning behind this forecast begins with the last month or so. April was dry across the Northwest. Many communities received less than 50% of the average rainfall they would expect for the month.
Much of this projection, however, is about the weather to come. The long-term forecasts for the next three months trend warm and dry on top of the dry April and warm and dry start to May.
Scientists at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) are using this data and more to create a fire season outlook for the country. Their latest outlook from May 1st predicts above-normal wildfire activity as early as June in the Inland Northwest.
