SPOKANE, Wash. — From the heart of downtown Spokane to the Monroe Street Bridge, over 32,000 people set out on a 7-mile trek through the Lilac City for Sunday’s annual Bloomsday Race.
As people made their way through the course, they found themselves on N. Pettet Drive, between TJ Meenach Drive and Maxwell Avenue, also known to Bloomies as “Doomsday Hill.”
Spokanite Deborah Bieker cheered racers on from the sidelines as they made their way up Doomsday Hill, providing them with some much-appreciated support.
“I just think Bloomsday is a rockstar thing. It’s everyone in their glory,” she said. “I just want them to know they’re recognized.”
One participant, Johnmark Porter, ran the race in a roman armor costume.
He trained for weeks, enduring lots of blisters.
“I am hoping today has a lot less bruises and blisters, he said.”
As for his costume, he said it was a chance he had to take.
“You just see the opportunity and you have to take it. So, [I’m] here for the moment,” Porter said.
Along the way, racers scored a sweet treat with one of donuts that have been handed out at the race for 25 years.
“This year, we came up with 121 dozen,” said the donut vendor.
It was a beautiful day for the annual race, and Spokane is sure to be filled with people wearing their hard-earned Bloomsday 2025 shirts on Monday.
