OKANAGAN COUNTY, Wash. — An Oroville woman’s body has been recovered five months after she vanished.
Sofia Sorensen Amara was first reported missing November 19, 2024 by her family.
They told the Okanagan County Sheriff’s Office she had been driving a white Toyota sedan at the time of her disappearance.
Amaro’s mother said the woman had just completed a 30-day stint for mental health treatment at an inpatient facility.
On November 21, the sheriff’s office reported that hunters found her Toyota abandoned just outside Loomis.
A days-long search for Amaro had to be suspended due to snow depth and active weather conditions in that area.
Over 20 searchers were enlisted and mobilized by the Okanagan County Sheriff’s Office on April 24, 2025, including the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Border Patrol, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR), and Ferry County SAR.
The Border Patrol provided three horse-mounted agents, a helicopter and several ground searchers.
The Spokane Co. Sheriff’s SAR, Ferry Co. Sheriff’s SAR and Okanagan Co. Sheriff’s SAR each brought in a police dog and handler.
The search began Thursday morning, and by around noon, Amaro’s body was found.
The Okanagan County Coroner has assumed the investigation into Amaro’s disappearance.
