SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Spokane County Commissioner Al French announced the county has secured $7.5 million in funding from Washington state to help filter out PFAs or ‘forever chemicals’ in the West Plains.
According to the county, the money will go to the deployment of Point-of-Entry Treatment systems, or POET, to areas impacted by PFAs.
These chemicals impact people reliant on well water. According to the West Plains Water Coalition, some wells in the area have contamination 50 times higher than what the EPA considers safe.
Commissioner French says the funding is less than half of the requested $18.5 million, but it will still help the installation of filtration systems for the most contaminated areas.
Spokane County expects the money to be ready by the fall and will provide updates at a later time on eligibility and implementation.
