PULLMAN, Wash – A Washington State University fraternity won’t be recognized on campus until at least 2030 because of allegations they hazed members.
The Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity has been under investigation since January.
WSU says “new members were forced to consume alcohol and cannabis, punished with cleaning duties for not meeting expectations, and required to do physical activities for poor performance on new member education quizzes.”
WSU also says members of the fraternity assigned tasks to new members “creating a power imbalance.”
The investigation found the fraternity was responsible for hazing, physical harms or threats, reckless endangerment, alcohol and drugs and drug paraphernalia.
The fraternity loses its recognition for five years. If and when it returns to campus, it must be an alcohol-free chapter for two years.
This website lists other WSU fraternities, sororities or student groups facing complaints or investigations.
Sigma Chi, for example, is on social probation and in trouble for chaining doors closed during a social event, which may have put students at risk if there was an emergency.
