MOSES LAKE, Wash — A violent series of events early Wednesday morning in Grant County left one man dead and two women in custody after a home invasion and subsequent police chase.
Grant County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call around 4:30 a.m. from a woman who reported being robbed, beaten by two women, pistol-whipped by a man, and held against her will for approximately two hours at a residence near the intersection of Road L.9-Northeast and Road 5 Northeast.
According to deputies, this was not a random incident, as all parties involved were known to one another.
Deputies said, shortly after the call, a deputy spotted a suspected vehicle in the drive-through at Jack in the Box on Wheeler Road in Moses Lake. Deputies and Moses Lake Police officers stopped the car on Third Avenue, where two women surrendered and were taken into custody.
According to deputies, a male suspect in the back seat jumped into the driver’s seat and fled, initiating a high-speed chase.
The pursuit ended when the driver failed to navigate a curve on Lakeshore Drive just south of the I-90 overpass, crashing through a fence and striking a utility pole. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The two women arrested have been identified as 36-year-old Champagne Garza and 30-year-old Becky Avalos. Both are being held in the Grant County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery and unlawful imprisonment.
The Washington State Patrol is investigating the crash, as Grant County sheriff’s deputies were involved in the pursuit.
