SPOKANE, Wash. — A man accused in a shooting at a Northeast Spokane gas station made his first appearance in Spokane County Superior Court Tuesday afternoon on charges including first-degree assault with a firearm, criminal conspiracy, and drive-by shooting.
According to an affidavit of facts filed by Spokane Police, a woman pulled into a gas station at the Circle K on N. Hamilton St. and E. North Foothills Dr. around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2025 to fill up her tank with gas.
Court documents listed her vehicle as a yellow pickup truck.
Surveillance video from the gas station showed Luis Escalona speed into the parking lot, get out of the car, and run towards the woman’s truck while pointing a gun at the pickup and firing it while the woman was in the driver’s seat.
The victim quickly drove away from the gas filling stall and out of the gas station parking lot, as Luis gave chase and continued pointing the gun at the truck.
While this was happening, Luis’ brother, Kleybar Escalona, was parked in a car next to the one Luis drove up in.
After the victim sped out of the parking lot, police said Kleybar left his car and jumped into the driver’s seat of his brother’s car, and Luis got into the passenger seat.
The pair followed the yellow truck out of the parking lot, and both vehicles were out of surveillance view.
A few minutes later, the brothers returned to the parking lot, split up into different cars, and left the gas station again.
The victim went to a friend’s house and called police.
She told officers she didn’t know the men who targeted her, or why they would do so.
A detective took photos of her radiator and grill, which were both damaged by gunfire.
Commissioner Eugene Cruz set bail for Kleybar Escalona Tuesday at $100,000.
His arraignment was set for May 6, 2025 at 9:00 a.m.
Kleybar’s brother, Luis, was arrested April 22, the same day as Kleybar’s first appearance.
Luis’ first appearance on the same charges was assumed to be scheduled for April 23, 2025 at 1:30 p.m.
