SEATTLE, Wash – Washington’s most recognizable manmade landmark celebrates a milestone Monday: 63 years ago, was the Space Needle’s opening day.
According to SpaceNeedle.com, it was conceived in 1959 for the 1962 World’s Fair. The designer was inspired by a broadcast tower in Germany.
The 605-foot-tall tower took eight months to build and was designed to fit the futuristic theme of the event.
The needle was ready to open on the first day of the World’s Fair and eventually hosted an estimated 2.65 million people.
The Space Needle at Seattle Center now hosts a restaurant, an outdoor observation tower and the world’s first and only rotating glass floor.
