SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga University community is mourning the death of Pope Francis, whose papacy touched millions worldwide through his messages of compassion and service.
The university will hold special services to honor the pontiff, including a prayer gathering Monday evening and a memorial Mass Tuesday.
“As a Catholic, Jesuit and humanistic institution, we are especially grateful to Pope Francis for his modeling of the values of humility, mercy, solidarity with the poor and vulnerable, and his relentless advocacy for peace and justice,” the university said in a statement.
Pope Francis made history as both the first Jesuit pope and the first from South America.
For those wishing to gather in remembrance, the University Chapel on the third floor of College Hall will be open Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
On Tuesday, April 22, a Mass of Resurrection will be held at 12:10 p.m. in the University Chapel with Father Gilbert Sunghera, S.J. presiding.
The university has made counseling resources available through University Ministry, Mission Engagement, and the Mission Integration office for community members seeking support.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the Della Strada Jesuit Community, the Catholic community worldwide and to all who mourn the loss of Pope Francis,” the university statement concluded.
