SPOKANE, Wash. — A Broadway sensation has taken over Spokane’s First Interstate Center for the Arts.
Hamilton, the award-winning musical, is now playing in the Lilac City bringing with it a modern take on the life of one of America’s Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton.
Told through a mix of hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton follows the rise of “the ten-dollar Founding Father without a father.” The story explores Hamilton’s journey from poverty to prominence, sharing his role in shaping a new nation — and his infamous duel with Aaron Burr.
Kendyal Sayu Yokohama stars as Eliza Hamilton, Alexander’s wife, and says the role has deep personal meaning.
“She’s always been my dream role…I feel like she reminds me a lot of my sister Jordyn. She loves her family, and that reminds me a lot of me — and there are a lot of parts that are not me.”
For Yokohama, portraying Eliza has also been an opportunity to connect with her own family’s history. While performing in Arkansas, she discovered the show had taken her to the same city where her grandfather was incarcerated during World War II in a Japanese American internment camp.
“Being on tour has allowed me to connect with my family history in a way I never would have without Hamilton. On top of being able to represent Asian women and Asian bodies on stage… being able to do that for the few people I get to see at the stage door — especially in primarily white cities — that’s what matters to me.”
Audiences can expect a powerful production that reframes America’s past through a contemporary lens.
Hamilton runs through April 20. Tickets start at $56. You can find tickets and more information at Broadway in Spokane.
