SPOKANE, Wash. – The former 2013 NL Manager of the Year Clint Hurdle has been with the Colorado Rockies for the past four years, and shares with us what he sees in this season’s Spokane Indians team.
“The commitment to one another, there’s a Buddhist term for it, it’s called ‘mudita’: to show expressive joy for someone else’s success,” Hurdle said. “Last year’s team had it. I just love the fact that these guys are getting a chance to go play a full season again, 150 games, stretch it out, it’s a long road. We’ve got some new faces, we’ve got some new energy, but we’ve got some staples in place that – they set the bar here, we expect to win.”
Hurdle led the Rockies to their only NL pennant title in franchise history back in 2007, and he returned to the club to help evaluate minor league talent.
“I like to see energy, and I like to see guys that aren’t just checking boxes, you’d like to think they’d all be excited,” Hurdle said. “Sometimes performance dictates attitude, so you keep an eye on that. As far as hitting, I’ll watch a couple compos. With the hitters, I watch if they hit the ball hard where it’s pitched, and when we’re pitching, I watch the pitcher to see if they can follow the catcher’s glove.”
The Indians play against the Vancouver Canadians tonight at 6:35 p.m. at Avista Stadium.
