MEAD, Wash. — Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Monday morning in Mead.
At approximately 12:55 a.m., Deputies responded to a reported shooting at a residence near the intersection of Grace Street and North Sheridan Street.
Upon arriving, SCSO said they found an adult male shot and unresponsive. Despite their efforts, and the Spokane County Fire District 9 Firefighters, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to SCSO, the incident began when 47-year-old Cheyanne R. Humphrey and a female companion confronted two males they believed were burglarizing a neighbor’s home.
According to court documents, one suspect fled, while the other struck Humphrey in the head with a rock. Armed with a pistol, Humphrey fired a shot, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Deputies discovered that Humphrey, a convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Humphrey was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in the 2nd Degree.
SCSO said the investigation revealed that the two suspects may have previously lived at the residence before being evicted, possibly explaining their presence.
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and additional charges or arrests may follow.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the deceased’s identity and cause of death when appropriate.
