SPOKANE, Wash. — Providence is marking 30 years of helping thousands of kids across the Inland Northwest improve their mental health.
Providence’s Behavioral and Emotional Skills Training Program, also known as the ‘BEST’ Program, helps children and their families address various mental health challenges.
12-year-old Nolan Moon recently graduated from the program and said it helped changed his life for the better.
“I was dealing with a voice in my head, Tourette’s and suicidal thoughts,” he said.
Nolan’s family said his mental health worsened when he transitioned from elementary school to middle school.
“We found out about the BEST Program through Nolan’s counselor, and thankfully, there was an opening available, and we were able to get in and participate,” said Scott Moon, Nolan’s father.
The BEST Program therapy rooms are all different themes to provide a safe space to children and their families.
“You learn how to control your emotions, to cope with your stress if there’s nobody there to help,” he said.
After weeks of therapy at Providence, Nolan said he started to see improvements.
“My internal voice pretty much stopped. I don’t have it anymore. And my Tourette’s stopped in some ways, and my suicidal thoughts just kind of disappeared,” Nolan said.
Nolan’s parents also met with a program counselor once a week.
“It gave us the communication tools to be able to talk and guide our coaching with our son,” Scott Nolan said.
