COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — The skyline of Coeur d’Alene is going to look very different here soon.
The Coeur d’Alene Resort broke ground on a new tower Wednesday that will add over 100 rooms for the city’s ever-growing tourism industry.
The resort says this tower, called the Sherman Tower, will cater more towards solo travelers.
Once the tower is fully built, it will have 15 floors and a parking garage with 100 spaces.
Bill Reagan, president of the Coeur d’Alene Resort, says people are looking to travel more especially after the pandemic.
“This is really the best site, offers the greatest views and really provides us with an opportunity to provide another experience for our guests,” Reagan said.
He says tourism in North Idaho is up about 3% this year and expected to keep growing.
“Not only people traveling more, but people are discovering the whole region,” Reagan said. “The Spokane, Coeur d’Alene region, they’re moving here because of the quality of life.”
The Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association says the changes to the city’s skylines might not be popular with every resident but it’s necessary to continue growing the area’s economy.
“If we stay stagnant, it’s going to do more detrimental things to our businesses instead of infuse the area,” said Emily Boyd, the executive director of the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association.
Bob and Breva Funston, who moved to Coeur d’Alene from western Washington a few years ago, say they don’t mind the tourism and new residents.
“We were visiting before and there was a lot of tourists then,” the couple said. “It hasn’t changed, we kind of enjoy watching the people and things like that. People who have lived here longer would be the ones going ‘Ugh, here it goes.”
The resort estimates the new tower will create about 200 different jobs once it’s fully built.
The Sherman Tower is expected to open in May of 2027. The resort says every room in the tower will have a view of the water once it’s open.
