SPOKANE, Wash. — To help local seniors get into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, a group of 8th grade students from Cataldo Catholic School at St. Augustine visited the South Hill Village for an afternoon of arts and crafts.
South Hill Village is home to community members living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, where they receive comprehensive care through the Pegasus Senior Living’s Connections program.
The students and residents crafted rainbow chains with pots of gold using construction paper, scissors, glue, yarn and glitter.
“It’s always fun to see the magic happen when our residents and young people come together,” said Kari Miller, Executive Director of South Hill Village. “Whether it’s crafting or chatting, these moments make everyone feel connected. And we’re lucky to have the Cataldo students add some extra cheer to the day.”
Studies show socialization, especially amongst different generations, improves the quality of life for seniors living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. It can help foster a sense of belonging and spur new relationships.
In addition to bringing visitors into the South Hill Village for activities and fun, residents are treated to periodic field trips to local hot spots like Walters’ Fruit Ranch.
