It starts with a little itch for many people in late winter.
The days get longer. The potholes take over the streets of Spokane. Dormant trees begin to come back to life.
Anglers check to see if their supply of hooks or flies are ready to go.
Fisher’s itch sets in.
People hoping to scratch the itch to fish the Spokane River between the Washington-Idaho border and 9-mile dam will have to wait a little longer.
That section of river is closed from March 16th to May 24th.
The closure allows for the safe spawning of the natural trout.
Once the season opens, selective rules apply to that section of river. That means single barbless hooks only, artificial lures and flies only and not bait or scent. Wild trout is catch and release only.
