SPOKANE, Wash. — Every day, scam calls and texts are blowing up people’s phones and they’re getting increasingly harder to recognize.
A recent scam text has been circulating pretending to be a bank and trying to get people to click a link.
The text appeared to be from STCU. It asked if a transaction looks strange rather than looking like a typical “you’re getting money” scam.
“They show up and they try to scare you,” said Dan Hansen, the vice president of communications for STCU. “They try to make you think you have to act right away that there’s something wrong with your account.”
The link attached to the text, however, is the scam and asks for your account information.
“Your financial institution already has your account information,” said Hansen. “If someone’s trying to get you to provide your account information online, that’s probably not from your financial institution.”
STCU says you should always act with caution with any out of the blue concerning messages posing as your bank.
If you’re unsure whether a phone call, email or text is a scam, STCU recommends calling the number listed on your bank’s website to confirm.
If you do find yourself caught up in the scam, Hansen says to call your financial institution as soon as possible to limit the damage.
