SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Central Valley School District is considering a new cell phone policy.
For the past year, CVSD has been working on an updated cell phone policy to replace the one it implemented in 2011.
The district surveyed thousands of students, parents and staff on how they feel about a new, stricter policy.
“It does limit the use of cell phones by our students during instructional time. That’s something that we just have to protect and make sure that we have a distraction-free environment,” said Matthew Lambert, CVSD Executive Academic Officer of the eastern region.
Similar to Spokane Public Schools‘ policy, elementary and middle school students would have less freedom with cell phone use, whereas high school students could use them during lunch and passing periods.
Among the nearly 2,500 students surveyed, 60% either disagreed or strongly disagreed with the idea of a stricter policy. 75% of parents and 95% of staff surveyed would like to see the policy implemented.
The Central Valley School Board will meet March 24 to make a final decision.
