BOISE, Idaho — Idaho is set to have a new primary form of execution for death row inmates.
On Wednesday, Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 37 into effect, making death by firing squad the primary mode of execution in the state.
Idaho lawmakers approved use of the firing squad in 2023, but only if the state could not secure the necessary chemicals for lethal injection.
The move comes just days after South Carolina death row inmate, Brad Sigmon, was executed by firing squad, the first U.S. prisoner to die by this method in 15 years.
Nine people are currently on death row in Idaho, including Thomas Creech.
In February 2024, the state attempted to execute Creech by lethal injection, but were unable to establish an IV line.
He was sentenced to death in 1974 for two murders.
The bill will go into effect in 2026.
