SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Public Schools is considering a new plan that would lease or sell six of its properties in order to save money and better address operational needs in the district.
On Wednesday, the school board will vote on the proposed plan. If passed, the first order of business would be to relocate The Community School and district office into a newly purchased building.
The Community School is one of SPS’s high schools and has been located off Monroe Street for 11 years. The plan would move the school to Spokane’s University District.
Principal and founding administrator Cindy McMahon said the change is needed to better accommodate students, since the current building was originally intended to be used by elementary students.
“We’ve pretty much been isolated in this little elementary school. When people are enrolling, they don’t often think of this little building on Monroe as a high school option,” she said.
McMahon said this new building, being located in an educational hub, could greatly benefit her students’ success.
“It’s kind of a dream come true,” said McMahon. “That would be right there where the where the action is.”
SPS Superintendent Dr. Adam Swinyard said these transitions would save SPS roughly $5 million.
“We’re trying to be as creative as possible, trying to reduce the footprint of the district and trying to make money or save money,” he said.
If the school board approves the plan on March 11, the main district office and The Community School would relocate within the next three to six years.
