DOUGLAS COUNTY, Wash. — Recent favorable weather has prompted the Department of Fish and Wildlife to plan a prescribed burn in Douglas County.
According to WDFW, crews will burn about 250 acres of the Sagebrush Flat Wildlife Area about 10 miles northwest of Ephrata.
WDFW says the burns will help restore the local ecosystem and reduce the risk of serious wildfires. The burn will help support native species like the pygmy rabbit and sage grouse.
Crews will only do the burn if weather permits on the day. Additional burns may be announced at a later time.
“Fire rejuvenates important native grass and brush favored by deer and elk, as well as small mammals and bird species, while providing improved ecosystem health and resiliency, reduced wildfire intensity, and improved access for recreational users,” said Matt Eberlein, prescribed fire program manager with WDFW.
