SPOKANE, Wash. — The West Valley Robotics team is gearing up for its first competition.
The team is made up of 40 students from all different grades. Each year, the team is given a set of rules and eight weeks to build a robot before facing off against teams from all over the state.
“The competitions are three-on-three robots, and it’s really fast paced,” said senior Henry Pierce. “It’s a lot of fun getting to watch that and getting to drive the robot.”
The robotics team not only teaches students the technical and mechanical skills needed to build a robot. It also sets the students up with life skills they can use after high school.
“In the robotics team, you have to be able to communicate across different sub teams. People have to know what other people are doing effectively so you don’t have conflict during your engineering process,” said senior Nicholas Barnhart.
The program also aims to help students figure out what is next for them, whether that’s pursuing a career in engineering or manufacturing.
The team’s first competition is next week in Salem, Oregon.
