MOSCOW, Idaho — Two cats died and a house was destroyed in a fire in Moscow Sunday morning, according to Moscow Fire Department.
Around 5:30 a.m. on February 16, firefighters responded to a house fire near Conestoga Drive and Fletcher Place in Moscow.
When fire crews arrived they found heavy smoke in the back of the home and determined the fire had started in the basement and spread to the first floor.
Cold temperatures and slick roads made the response challenging, but firefighters eventually got the flames under control.
When the fire broke out, two adults and one child were home, but were alerted by smoke alarms and evacuated safely.
MFD said two cats died in the fire, but another cat and one dog were rescued. The dog was taken to a vet hospital for treatment.
The house is considered a “total loss” and the family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Firefighters said they suspect the fire might have started near the furnace, but an investigation is still underway.
While responding to the fire, one MFD fire engine slid through an intersection and into a home’s yard and hit a small tree. There were no injuries and MFD will work with the homeowners to repair any damage to the yard.
