SPOKANE, Wash – Pickleball players in Spokane could soon have more places to play and more visibility for the sport, if the Spokane Park Board moves forward with a new agreement.
At its monthly meeting Wednesday, the Spokane Park Board will consider a memorandum of understanding with the Spokane Pickleball Club to establish a working relationship and grow the sport throughout the city park system.
The two entities would collaborate on events and activities.
The memorandum says Spokane Parks currently provide a “lower than average level of service for pickleball.”
It allows for the pickleball club to reserve courts for lessons/clinics or other organized play, but also leaving courts open to the public.
The pickleball club would not be allowed to charge for court reservations or play unless it’s for a special event for which they obtain a permit.
Any revenues generated from special events would go towards improving sport courts.
For its part, the pickleball club is offering to volunteer its services by utilizing membership dues, tournament fees and fundraising dollars to fund court supplies like nets, court resurfacing and new court construction.
SPC also agrees to focus medium and long-term fundraising efforts to build a regional pickleball facility at Franklin Park.
That would include up to 20 courts, lighting, a roof and spectator seating.
