SPOKANE, Wash. — Sports never stop in Spokane — even in the dead of winter.
Right now, it’s one of the busiest times of the year at The Podium, with the Whitworth Invitational taking place this week and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships set for next week.
Spokane Sports, a nonprofit organization, considers the city to have five seasons—one of which is “sports season” or “fast,” specifically for track and field. Over the next few days, hundreds of athletes from across the West Coast will compete in Spokane.
First up is the Whitworth Invitational, a collegiate meet featuring elite performances in sprints, distance races, jumps, and more. The event runs Feb. 14-15.
Following that, the GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place Feb. 17-18, bringing together top athletes from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
“It’s freezing cold outside, and yet it’s just rocking in here during an event,” said Keytra Lewis, director of marketing and communications for Spokane Sports. “The stands, you know, they get full, and the excitement—it’s just pretty cool to see all of it.”
Tickets for upcoming events are on sale now, and volunteers are also welcome. No experience is needed to help out at The Podium’s events. More information can be found on the Spokane Sports website.
