SPOKANE, Wash. — A few people living in the Otis Orchards area might be missing some mail.
On January 15, someone broke into the post office in Otis Orchards and stole several packages and envelopes.
“The did gain access to what we would describe as the ‘workroom floor.’ So, any of that kind of processing and mail where packages are sorted… in that back area,” said John Weigand of the United States Postal Inspection Service.
He said although post office burglaries are rare, especially in the Otis Orchards area, it can still happen anywhere.
As of Monday afternoon, no suspects have been identified or arrested.
“We’re still following some leads,” Weigand said.
USPIS said people who use the Otis Orchards post office should remain vigilant in watching their bank statements and personal accounts, because information could have been stolen, in addition to physical packages.
“Just keep an eye on those things, and if something happens, definitely report it to us. Financial crimes like this can be the biggest way that we solve a lot of these crimes,” Weigand said.
The post office said it is increasing security and reducing operational hours during the investigation.
“We are figuring out any of those vulnerabilities to try to mitigate those for the future,” Weigand said.
