SPOKANE, Wash. — Imagine not having a safe space to store your most essential items, like medication, mail or even your ID.
This is the reality for many homeless people in our community.
That’s why the local nonprofit, Blessings and Beyond, is stepping up to help. It created lockers for Spokane’s homeless population to store their belongings.
While the organization is still figuring out all the details, it hopes they will be available soon.
The storage spaces are 36″ x 18.18″ x 15.07″, and can only be unlocked with a finger print.
“It’s really personal for someone. It’s that dignity piece where they’re like, ‘this is ownership,'” Robert Martin, Director of Business and Community Relations at Blessings and Beyond said. “When someone has that ownership, they tend to move forward, or want to move forward.”
There is space to fit a backpack, clothes, medication and more. They also have an outlet inside and a slot for mail.
“They may still be homeless and on the street living but they’ll have a place to store their items that is safe and secure because safety and security is huge for a person who is really looking to get off the street,” Martin said. “If someone can get into that mode, then they have all the power to move forward.”
The hope is that these can be installed at shelters, treatment centers and other facilities.
While Blessings and Beyond says it does have organizations interested in these lockers, they are still looking for other partners.
