SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Glen Dylan Burkey was captured in Missoula, Montana. He was accused of shooting through a kitchen door at a house in Hillyard early Sunday morning, with a bullet striking 13-year-old Gavin Looper in the head, killing him.
Chief Kevin Hall said Missoula Police for capturing Burkey. He also thanked officers with the major crimes unit for working “nonstop” the past four days to track Burkey down.
Chief Hall provided statistics on gun violence from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), saying,
“Gun violence is killing our children.”Our community should be outraged. Our children are dying at the hands of gun violence.”
Chief Hall said he rarely hears from the community about gun violence, which he says is an issue in Spokane. He says he hears more complaints about the homeless. He said people often say,
“I don’t call 911 because nothing happens.”
He urged Spokane residents to report violent crimes as they happen, because then he can better strategize where his officers need to concentrate their patrols.
Chief Hall said in 2025, “hot spot” policing, social network monitoring, violence intervention, gun crime intelligence and other strategies are in play to help bring down violent crimes in Spokane. He said police cannot do it alone, and that officers must “co-produce safety with the community.”
Chief Hall said there were about 100 shootings in total in Spokane in 2024, with about 45 victims.
