KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho. — Idaho firefighters are back at home with their families after fighting the California wildfires over the last few weeks.
The Palisades Fire is now 95% contained, while the Eaton Fire is nearly 100% contained.
Along with firefighters from around the country, Crew 5 of Northern Lakes Fire in Hayden, Idaho, worked to get the fires under control and help clean up debris.
The crew of four worked in 24-hour shifts, providing much-needed relief and rest for the California firefighters.
Captain Eric Sorenson said the crew felt LA’s appreciation throughout their time there.
“Everyone on the freeway was just waving a honking, ‘thank you so much, we want to buy you a coffee,’ so that was very eye-opening on its own,” he said.
Captain Sorenson said the destruction from the fires was unlike anything he had ever battled.
He said he is positive that LA’s fire departments would be there for his crew in the same way if need-be.
Now that the fires are mostly under control, the Northern Lakes crew is getting some much-needed time with their loved ones.
