SPOKANE, Wash. — A local church is using a personal approach to help people in their battle against alcohol and drug addiction.
Victory Outreach near Sinto Avenue and Monroe Street in Spokane is part of a national network of churches and has operated in Spokane for the last 30 years.
The churches’ recovery houses provide people struggling with addiction a place to stay while going through treatment.
The church in Spokane also runs a thrift shop to help fund its outreach programs.
Many of the staff at Victory are former participants of the program who understand first-hand what those in the program are going through.
Victory Outreach says its recovery homes across the country have a 78% success rate helping people quit drugs, alcohol and gang violence.
One local success story belongs to Jesse Tafoya. His parents attended Victory Church when he was young.
Tafoya entered the program after having issues abusing drugs an alcohol. After completing the program, he decided to stick around and give back to the program that helped him get clean.
“I think being able to be impacted through my story, it just helps me relate to them. It helps build a one-on-one connection. In the times when they might be feeling low, it brings hope and a future for them,” he said.
Currently, Tafoya is the church’s Home Director and said he’s working with six men in the recovery home, but they have room for up to 12.
“They learn how to do a 12-step. They have anger management stuff that we work with them on, just really learning how to do life and be productive in society. We do job skilled training through the day,” he said.
The church’s pastor, Anthony Usselmann, said they plan to start raising funds to establish a women’s recovery home.
