SPOKANE, Wash – The Mead School Board voted to hire a Seattle law firm to conduct an investigation/audit of the Mead High School football team, in light of several lawsuits over hazing and harassment.
The Mead High School football program came under fire when a player came forward alleging harassment and hazing at a football camp in Cheney. An initial investigation says the coach failed to act on the allegations in a timely manner.
The Mead School District fired coach Keith Stamps last month, after the football season was over. At that time, the district said a new lawsuit revealed more evidence that Stamps was not honest about what he knew regarding the allegations.
At a school board meeting in early December, the school board voted to hire an outside investigator for an investigation/audit of athletic programs.
At a later meeting on Dec. 19, the board narrowed the focus, voting to hire a Seattle law firm to conduct an investigation focusing on the Mead High School football program.
The board said it could expand the investigation to other areas “if warranted.”
The firm hires between $175-$675 an hour.
At the early December meeting, several parents of football players expressed their concerns and dismay over Coach Stamps’ dismissal.
One parent said “the recent termination is a ‘witch hunt’ and implored their district to reconsider.”
