Avista customers across the Inland Northwest should expect the new year to come with a higher cost.
Starting January 1, the energy company is raising its rates. Those who rely on gas to heat their homes and cook will see the biggest increase.
Many Avista customers told 4 News Now they weren’t surprised to hear of the rising cost, due to inflation. Some customers said the increase will hurt because their utility bills are already high.
Carol Weltz is the Director of Community Action at Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners (SNAP). She said there are still ways to try to keep your energy bill down in the new year.
“We have a lot of programs. One great one is with Avista. It’s our new ‘My Energy Discount Washington,’ where you can get a percentage off your bill based on your income,” said Weltz.
SNAP also provides emergency programs for the months when you can’t cover your energy bills.
“Say your car broke down this month and you thought you had enough for your bills, but the car broke down and now you don’t have enough for your electric bill. We can help,” said Weltz.
In addition to those programs, SNAP also offers weatherization services to help keep your home warm during the coldest months of the year. Some of those programs are available to anyone, regardless of income.
