SPOKANE, Wash. — An argument over a blanket at an apartment in downtown Spokane escalated into multiple people assaulted and SWAT being called, according to court documents.
27-year-old Michael Sam made his first court appearance Monday on charges of first-degree assault for stabbing two people.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, the two victims were asleep on a futon at an apartment on 6th Avenue and Ash Street around 9 a.m.
One of the victims reported Sam lived at the apartment with others and was his “Street Uncle”. The victim said Sam came into the apartment drunk and demanded the blanket they were using.
The altercation escalated with Sam fighting multiple people in the apartment including punching a woman and dog, according to the affidavit.
The court docs say Sam eventually pulled a foldable knife and slashed one woman across the breast and one man in the neck.
One of the victims reported Sam threatened to kill everyone if they didn’t leave the apartment.
SWAT responded and a standoff occurred for several hours. Some nearby apartments were evacuated for safety.
Eventually SWAT deployed a chemical agent in the apartment and Sam left the apartment and was arrested.
According to court documents, Sam was initially assigned $150,000 bail over the weekend, but due to prior convictions his bail was increased to $250,000 following his first appearance on Monday.
Sam’s next court date is December 24, at 8 a.m.
