POST FALLS, Idaho – A non-profit organization in North Idaho dedicated to supporting veterans in need is seeking assistance from the community.
In 2011, Idaho National Guard member Nicholas Newby was killed 10 months into his year-long deployment in the Iraq War, shattering his mother, Theresa Hart’s, heart into a million pieces.
“I want to make sure that nobody forgets about him. And I want to make sure that nobody forgets about all of those that have died in service to our country,” said Theresa Hart, founder of Newby-Ginnings.
Two years after the death of her son, Hart started Newby-Ginnings.
The organization assists veterans, their families, and active-duty members who are struggling to make ends meet, including veterans like Gordon Crause.
“She gave me clothes for my back, clothes for my children’s back and everything, she’s helped give me shoes, food,” said Crause.
Crause says that he and his family’s life wouldn’t be going nearly as well without these resources.
At the Post Falls site Hart says, “Everything in here is free for our families. We don’t have price tags on anything. We don’t have a cash register. The only thing that we require is proof of military service.”
However, Hart says, Newby-Ginnings has outgrown its current space after eight years and is now forced to turn away donations that could assist local veterans.
So, They’re looking to make a change and have started fundraising for a new permanent home for the non-profit that began at Hart’s dining room table.
“It’s not just going to be Newby-Ginnings, it’s going to be the Newby-Ginnings Veteran community Center,” said Hart.
