PULLMAN, Wash – As more players nationwide enter the transfer portal or opt out of post-season bowl games, WSU quarterback John Mateer is still practicing with the team and has not yet made a decision about his future.
Coach Jake Dickert shared that news with reporters Friday, as the Cougs prepare to head to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl later this month.
Dickert told reporters Mateer will take some time with his family this week to make his decision.
Mateer finished the regular season with 3,139 passing yards and 826 rushing yards. He threw 29 touchdown passes and ran for another 15, leading the WSU to an 8-4 record.
His name has been mentioned by fanbases across the country as a potential transfer quarterback and coaches have said he’s being offered big money to transfer to another team.
Also at practice Friday, wide receiver Josh Meredith announced he’s staying with the team for another season.
“I bleed Cougar blood,” he said.
On Mateer’s decision to keep practicing with the team, Meredith said it means a lot.
“That’s my guy,” Meredith said.
Several prominent Cougar players are already in the transfer portal, but so far, none of them announced any decisions with new teams.
The Cougs will face Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl December 27th.
The team will head to San Diego without this season’s offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and running backs coach.
WSU fired the defensive coordinator after the regular season. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle took a job with Oklahoma and running backs coach Mark Atuaia announced he’s heading to the University of Utah.
