SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane City Council voted on Monday night to delay the potential sale of a 200-acre property in Latah Valley.
The Thorpe property, also called the ‘Westwood Area,’ is owned by the Washington Department of Natural Resources and is being considered as the future home for a new housing development.
The resolution approved on Monday night was put forth by councilmembers Dillon, Navarrete and Klitzke.
The 180-day pause is meant to give different organizations and tribal communities the opportunity to weigh in on the future of the land.
Many nature enthusiasts and conservationists attended the city council meeting and expressed their hope for the land to be protected.
“We forgot that we needed a place in our city to go for healing and respite from the chaos, and this is one of those places,” said one person during the public comment period.
The company looking to purchase the land, Blue Fern Management, said it plans to set aside half of the land for assets like parks, fire stations, libraries and park-and-ride spots.
DNR will host a public meeting about the potential land exchange on Wednesday, December 4 at 6:15 p.m. at Spokane Central Library (906 W. Main Avenue).
