CHENEY, Wash — Before long, double decker buses will be cruising high above the streets of Cheney.
In the coming months, seven buses standing at 13 feet tall each will be hitting the roads for training. This is part of the Spokane Transit Authority’s 2025 service revisions.
Each bus costs more than $1.26 million. Three quarters of that cost was taken care of by state and federal grants.
“The buses should be here sometime in the first quarter. They are almost done being manufactured,” said Carly Cortright, chief communication and customer service officer. “We’re excited to be able to again increase that capacity. Right now, even with those articulated buses, sometimes they’re jam packed full of people.”
STA said Eastern Washington University is creating a higher demand for bigger buses and more reliable routes. It pointed out that the usual accordion-style, 60-foot-long bus doesn’t handle snow well and isn’t big enough for everyone riding in Cheney.
