SPOKANE, Wash. — A local organization is helping homeowners complete expensive repairs and home improvements projects to help stay warm this winter.
The programs are offered by the nonprofit, Spokane Neighborhood Actions Partners (SNAP) and can help homeowners with projects like new windows or furnace installation.
“I literally, physically thought they were giving me a hug every time they said something new,” said John Bowne, Air Force veteran and SNAP customer.
Bowen has lived in his home for 26 years. He calls it his “Lego house.”
When his roof needed replacing, he reached out to SNAP to see if they could help.
They agreed to help with the roof, and a few other important projects as well.
“I had taken a couple of falls and the challenge of crawling into the tub and getting out safely was getting to be a real challenge and that’s something the VA agreed with,” said Bowen.
SNAP’s Single Family Rehabilitation Program provided the money Bowen needed to redo his roof and add a new walk-in shower.
Loans from the program range from $10-$50,000, with low interest rates to make sure they are affordable.
A customer needs to make 80% of the area median income or below to qualify for SNAP assistance, which is just under $100,000 a year for a family of four.
Bowen said getting those projects done made a huge difference in his quality of life.
“The things that I need for my wellbeing and just getting the best out of life that I could ask for is being handled by people that just gave me a hug,” he said.
There are currently waitlists for a few of SNAPs programs, which can often take a few months to get through. However, if you have special circumstances, you may be able to move through the process a little quicker.
“If you don’t know, just call. Call and ask. It doesn’t hurt anything. It doesn’t cost a dime to call and ask. If we can help you, we’ll find a way of helping you,” said John Hoover, Director of Housing Services at SNAP.
