MOSCOW, Idaho – New student housing is coming to the University of Idaho.
The Idaho Board of Education Thursday approved a $163 million development plan for the capital project.
U of I made the request to address aging housing as well as an increase in demand.
“The current capacity and physical condition of University housing does not meet student needs,” the request reads. U of I officials pointed out to the Board of Education that the average age of on-campus housing is older than 50 years.
The university also points to growing enrollment. Fall 2024 enrollment was 12,286 students, up 437 from 2023.
Right now, U of I is renting a nearby motel to provide temporary housing to 200 students. Without it, the university would be at 104% of capacity for student housing.
The project includes demolishing and rebuilding South Hill Apartments and renovating Wallace Residential Complex, Theophilus Tower and Elmwood Apartments.
This would be done in phases starting in the fall of 2025 and finishing in 2027.
