In the wake of Donald Trump’s re-election, Washington leaders shared how they plan to protect Washingtonians’ rights during the next presidential administration.
On Thursday morning, Governor-Elect Bob Ferguson and Attorney General-Elect Nick Brown spoke about their plans to safeguard rights against Trump’s policies on immigration, civil rights and reproductive healthcare.
Both said they plan to use the law, the same approach Ferguson took when he filed numerous lawsuits against Trump during his first presidency.
Ferguson won 55 of those lawsuits against Trump.
He said it might not be as easy this time around.
“One of the many reasons why we were successful with our litigation against the Trump administration was they were often sloppy in the way they rolled out their executive actions. This time around, I anticipate that we will see less of that,” said the Governor-Elect.
When the possibility of Trump retaking office arose, Ferguson said he and other Democratic attorneys general began preparing.
“We’re not just waking up yesterday thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, there’s a Trump administration coming and we need to get ready for it,’ There has been a lot of work for many, many months from my team to prepare for this,” said Ferguson.
Ferguson’s successor, Attorney General-Elect Nick Brown also reassured Washingtonians that illegal activity won’t be tolerated.
“We will do everything in our power to defend the rights of Washingtonians, the people o this great state, and to make sure that when there is an illegal action, that we will look very closely to see if we can bring a case, if we can be successful,” he said.
When asked about the possibility of retribution from Trump, Ferguson said he hopes not to have an adversarial relationship with the Commander In Chief.
