ID PROPOSITION 1 – OPEN PRIMARIES
Idaho voters are so far rejecting Prop 1, otherwise known as the Idaho Open Primaries Act.
As of 10:48 p.m. on Election Day, around 72% of voters have voted ‘no’ on the proposition.
If passed, it would replace the current system of choosing candidates.
Right now, Idaho voters have to declare a party before the primary election and only vote for candidates in that party.
This initiative would mean any candidates could compete in the primary and voters can choose from any of them, regardless of party registration. The top four candidates would move on to the general election.
The measure would also require a ranked-choice voting system for the general election. Right now, voters pick one candidate for each office and the one with the most votes wins.
If the initiative passes, voters rank candidates by preference.
Supporters of the initiative say the current system leaves nearly 300,000 independent voters out. This would bring the state back to a system that was in place for 40 years until 2011.
Opponents of the initiative say it actually sets the state back and creates a “California-style jungle primary” where voters are choosing candidates from other parties.
