SPOKANE, Wash. — Students at Moran Prairie Elementary School had a ‘super’ time on Wednesday with their very own ‘Election Day!’
On October 23, students voted for their favorite comic book characters in an activity meant to teach them about the upcoming United States General Election.
The idea is that of Assistant Principal Tad Heinen, and is meant to teach students about the voting process.
“They are learning to agree and disagree respectfully and listen to other points of view on top of that,” said 4th Grade Teacher Kate Huschke.
Students could cast their vote for one of several comic book heroes, including Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Batman and Captain America.
“I really like Spider-Man because he has a sense of humor. He’s really funny, but he’s also super cool. I like the villains he fights and his power and abilities,” said 4th grader Ezekiel Williams.
Huschke said the lesson is a great way for students to learn about the importance of voting.
“Your vote is like your choice, like Ms. Huschke said, and it feels like, if you are not voting, you are just being silent,” said 4th grader Aurelia Hanifer.
The smaller scale of the election helps students to understand how our General Election and other elections in our country make decisions.
“When they see that there was a 16-vote difference between the two, when they see that small amount, those are numbers that they can relate to, and it’s easier for them to see that their vote does count,” said Huschke.
October 30 is the final day for students to vote for favorite superhero at Moran Prairie.
