SPOKANE, Wash. — Crews kicked off a major cleanup effort in the Dishman Hills Natural Area this week.
For the next several months, the 190-acre nature area will undergo a thorough cleaning aimed at preventing wildfires in its forests.
The project is managed by Spokane County Mitigation Coalition, a collaborative group comprised of Department of Natural Resources and other agencies from Spokane County and Spokane Valley.
“The idea with the coalition is that we used everybody’s skills, abilities and funding sources and we work together collaboratively to get the project done,” said Nick Jeffries, Chair of the coalition.
He said the coalition helps get projects like the Dishman cleaning up and running.
“This coalition is going to ramp up the participation and the amount of acres w are accomplishing in the county,” he said.
Jeffries said the coalition plans to go after large amounts of funding and put the money towards more wildfire prevention efforts.
The Dishman Hills cleanup is set to wrap in April 2025.
