Spokane County voters will soon receive their ballots as the general election approaches, with ballots expected to be distributed starting Wednesday. This year, many residents will find local school district bonds and levies on their ballots, crucial for funding educational infrastructure and operations.
Understanding Bonds and Levies
Bonds typically fund construction and infrastructure projects, while levies provide funding for day-to-day operations within the schools, like extracurriculars and nurses. Here’s a look at some key measures voters will consider.
West Valley School District
The West Valley School District is proposing a capital projects levy to replace an expiring levy. This measure would cost taxpayers $1 per $1,000 of assessed value. The funds are earmarked for significant improvements, including enhanced traffic flow at Seth Woodard and Orchard Center Elementary Schools, as well as updates to safety and security systems, roof repairs, and HVAC improvements.
Cheney School District
In Cheney, voters will weigh a $72 million bond aimed at addressing overcrowding in schools. The plan includes constructing a new elementary school in Airway Heights and acquiring land for future school facilities. Immediate improvements funded by this bond would enhance bus loop access, upgrade HVAC systems, and refurbish athletic facilities at Cheney High School.
Coeur d’Alene School District
The Coeur d’Alene School District seeks renewal of a levy estimated to cost taxpayers $93 per $100,000 of assessed value annually. This renewal is at the same rate as the expiring levy. The district warns that failure to pass this measure could drastically reduce support, allowing only one school nurse to remain and potential cuts to sports programs. Additionally, the funds would support school safety officers to enhance security during emergencies.
Deer Park School District
Finally, the Deer Park School District is asking the community to consider a $55 million bond to alleviate overcrowding issues. This funding would also address immediate needs such as updating athletic facilities, improving HVAC systems, and replacing roofs across district buildings.
As the election nears, Spokane County voters will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of local education through these important measures.
