SPOKANE, Wash. — Terrain is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a free art exhibit featuring over 800 pieces in downtown Spokane on Friday evening.
The gallery, open until midnight, features work from around 400 artists across various mediums, live draw-offs, and art battles.
“We’re super excited, really nostalgic about just the change and growth of the creative community in Spokane,” said Jackie Caro, Terrain’s Operations Director. This year’s event allows for reflection on the organization’s growth.
Since its inception in 2008, Terrain has hosted an annual art gallery, with attendance growing from a few hundred to an expected 7,000 this year. The number of participating artists has also increased significantly, from 30 in the early years to 427 this year.
Caro noted, “Just being a Spokanite, it’s just incredible to see them continue to show up and the community continue to show up.”
This year’s exhibit includes a wide range of art forms, from sculptures and pottery to literary readings and film screenings. There will also be performances from several bands, as well as live draw-offs and art battles.
“We have a theater where an artist did an installation. We have a literature park with live sod on the third floor, swings—it looks like you’re in a park setting,” said Caro.
Last year, Terrain raised over $1 million through art sales and artist payments.
“It’s amazing—anyone can come; it’s free to attend, which is nice. But it’s also a way for us to support our local artists and keep them in Spokane,” said Caro.
The Terrain Gallery is located at 628 N. Monroe St, and is family-friendly and open to the public, showcasing all that the Inland Northwest has to offer.
