CHENEY, Wash. — Cheney Public Schools (CPS) is placing a $72 million bond on the ballot this upcoming election. This bond was originally placed on the ballot during the February Special Election but didn’t meet the 60% supermajority threshold to pass.
Majority of the bond would be used to fund a new elementary school in Airway Heights.
Sunset Elementary is currently the only elementary school in the city of Airway Heights, and the district says it is at 121% capacity.
“Our Airway Heights students are bused across our school district to other elementary schools. And the goal of that building in Airway Heights is so that students go to their home school,” said Ben Ferney, Superintendent of Cheney Public Schools
The new elementary school the district hopes to build would accommodate 500 students.
If passed, the bond would cost taxpayers an estimated $45 per $100,000 of assessed property value. This means that if you own a home valued at $400,000, you’d be paying around $180 a year in taxes for the bond.
The bond would also pay to improve kitchens at Salnave Elementary School and Windsor Elementary School. The space is so small at Salnave, kitchen staff can’t prepare all of the food there. Majority of it has to be prepared at the district’s office.
New fencing, pathways, stadium bleachers, and ADA upgrades would also be made at Cheney High School. The renderings provided by the district are below:
Safety improvements for bus and pedestrian traffic at Windsor and Salnave Elementary Schools would also be made if the bond were to pass. You can see those renderings below:
Combined with the two levies passed in February and previous bonds the community is still paying for, people will be paying a total of about $386 per $100,000 of assessed property value in 2025 if this bond is passed.
