SPOKANE, Wash. — Despite the summer coming to a close, the construction on Cheney-Spokane Road is not finished yet.
This summer, the City of Spokane stripped and repaved Cheney-Spokane Road on the west side of Highway 195.
Then, last week, crews dug up the newly repaved road to replace a water main pipe.
Although this seems out of order, the city said the water main replacement was planned, and that if it had been done earlier, the whole street would have remained unpaved.
The continuing construction and road closures have frustrated many business owners in the area.
“We’ve been as patient as we possibly can, but there’s really nothing else we can do,” said Susan Shelby who owns four businesses along Cheney-Spokane Road.
Drivers must now take a detour onto a bumpy, dusty road to avoid the construction.
Shelby said she hopes the road work won’t deter customers this fall.
“So come pave or gravel or just make your way through and we’ll be here,” she said.
An official from the City of Spokane said the section of the road currently causing the detour will be paved this week.
In addition to the water pipe replacement, WSDOT crews will close the northbound exit from Highway 195 to Cheney-Spokane Road between 7 p.m. – 6 a.m. daily, from September 23-27.
