SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — If you own property in the West Plains area, Spokane County Commissioner Al French is asking you to join in on a request to the legislature for a well-filtration system.
At a town hall meeting over the summer, Commissioner French said many property owners in the area wanted full house and livestock filtration for their wells that were contaminated with PFAS.

According to the USGS, PFAS are a group of synthetic “forever chemicals” used in everything from the linings of fast food boxes to firefighting foam. The Environment Protection Agency said high concentrations of PFAS could lead to health complications like decreased fertility, developmental delays in children, increased cancer risks, reduced ability for the body to fight infections and a greater risk of obesity.
“As we prepare for next year’s legislative session my top priority is getting clean water to all the property owners on the West Plains. Compiling a full list of private well owners with PFAS contamination, and those that are interested in receiving well-filtration systems, is a starting point,” Commissioner French said.
French asked rural communities that have a confirmed PFAS presence in water supplies to email vlyfar@spokanecounty.org to join the list of people wanting well-filtration systems. The last day to sign up is September 30.
