COLBERT, Wash. – Northwest Christian High School football is a team dominant in infancy.
With a program age not old enough to play on the team and three years removed from their first league title, NWC looks well on their way to another.
“I feel like a lot of the years we’re like friends,” Crusaders wide receiver Braylon Comfort said. “So, we’re always together. We’re always hanging out. So it kind of like drives us on the field. We can just, it’s like backyard ball. We’re just playing, and it tends to work out for us.”
The Crusaders do all this without a true home field, practicing on their baseball outfield and using extra players for field goal posts, but none of that matters when they’ve racked up six straight wins.
“To be honest, we’re just grateful to even have a program,” head coach Marshall Hart said. “I never dreamed this was being the case when I was in high school. So it’s really cool. I had to play at Riverside and Shadle, and it’s really cool to have this experience here for the boys.”
“Just the team, we’re very connected,” Crusaders running back Hudson Somes said. “It’s, it’s a brotherhood here. And we just take on adversity and just go out there and battle every week.”
Northwest Christian now uses an elite senior class, one leading a plus-233 scoring difference, outscoring opponents 196-12 in just the past month.
“We just like to stay focused on the week we’re in and just get ready to kick the teeth in and whatever team we play,” Crusaders quarterback Adin Spuler said.
“Everyone works hard,” Somes said. “Everyone comes to practice wanting to get better. When someone makes a mistake, they always fix it.”
These 34 young men, mostly iron men playing both sides all game, strive to make a lasting legacy not just within their own team, but for the whole Colbert community, no matter what sport.
“Soccer this year is phenomenal,” Hart said. “Claire is… She’s incredible what she’s able to do. But it’s a small school like us where everybody gets to know each other. Like nobody really falls through the cracks. So we go out, we watch a soccer game. You know, as a teacher here, I can tell you who every girl is on the team, and we just get a chance to invest in everybody and really get a chance to love on everybody, which is really one of the which is really one of the greatest perks of being in a small school like this.”
The Crusaders next play at the Reardan Screaming Eagles. NWC looks for their fourth straight win against Reardan.
